Building a Strong Foundation in Phonemic Awareness
Explore phonological and phonemic awareness tasks in depth following the developmental progression.
Kirsten Lewis returns, with a deep dive into the developmental progression of phonological and phonemic awareness.
Activities to address phonological awareness will be explained and demonstrated.
Tools to support struggling students will be provided.
This presentation is intended for both parents and educators and the provided activities are appropriate for young students requiring early intervention, as well as older students with dyslexia who require remediation.
It will be interactive, so plan to engage and ask questions as we explore this often underdeveloped foundational reading skill.

As a Speech Language Pathologist, Kirsten recognized that children with verbal speech and language disorders were also demonstrating difficulties learning to read and write. She began to investigate this correlation and engaged in extensive study to learn more about written language disorders, including dyslexia. Kirsten now specializes in the prevention, early intervention and remediation of children with written language disorders. She became certified as a Structured Literacy Dyslexia Specialist through the Center for Effective Reading Instruction and the International Dyslexia Association in 2019.
She is the founder and director of Reach the Summit Literacy Clinic in Eagle, Idaho. Kirsten was born in Colorado. She is married with one daughter. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time outdoors hiking, biking, skiing and running, and spending time with her family.
